Alexandria to Cairo is built from a single condition: looking out from a moving train.
All of the photographs were made between Cairo and Alexandria, along one of Egypt’s most heavily used rail corridors. The journey passes through the city’s edges, industrial zones, agricultural land, and provincial towns. What appears is incomplete—seen in passing, shaped by speed and obstruction.
Shot in black and white through worn train windows, the images carry the marks of the surface they pass through. Scratches, dust, and residue interrupt the view. These are not defects. They are part of the structure of the work.
The project began after Hassan was briefly detained for photographing in public space. The train became a way to continue working—moving, anonymous, and partially shielded. What the work holds is not only what is outside, but the condition of looking under constraint.
With an introduction by Anthony Hamboussi, Alexandria to Cairo sits within a lineage of photographic practices concerned with infrastructure, access, and the politics of visibility.
